Radical Estonian animation from the 70s, only possible because of a slight thaw in Soviet policy and the minimal restrictions over children’s media. Janno Põldma is a trickster and a madman who really understands what it’s like to be a child. You are in a process of inventing the world, and the moments where your vision clashes against the values and hysteria of adults are unbearably lonely. This short was made based on children’s drawings, collected from Põldma’s time working with kids.
Põldma is also the one of the biggest mainstream children’s animators in Estonia. Lotte from Gadgetville is a sweet puppy-girl who travels the world to return a migrating baby bird to its family. Finding this short after a childhood watching his later work is like finding strawberry-flavored lube under your mom’s sink.
